Baltic Birch Plywood Kitchen + Seating

As part of a larger property renovation project we designed and built a custom kitchen, this was formed around Ikea carcasses because the client liked the design of their flexible drawer systems. Along with making the plywood drawer fronts and end-panels we also built a number of bespoke cabinets within the kitchen in order for the design to work with the space and integrated appliances.

To create a hard-wearing and robust worktop we formed the base from 18mm Baltic Birch plywood and laminated it with white Formica, this is not only a proven hard-wearing product, though also a stain resistant material which creates a beautiful finish in its own right. We used this style for the worktop upstand to form a clean aesthetic between the marriage of the two pieces.

The kitchen space was designed to be a seamless flow of ply that wraps around the kitchen-dining-living space. Within this design is a private dining nook that we built additional pantry storage underneath as well as a large bench seat that over looks the inner courtyard. The bench seat was designed with storage in mind and we installed further pantry drawers underneath the seat to give more than enough storage space for a working kitchen of a three-bed home.

The island unit was a special project, not only did we add substantial storage within the body of it though we worked with Smile Plastics in Wales to create a feature worktop out of recycled plastic (chipped plastic bottles). It adds intrigue and an interesting depth to the surface as well as a rainbow of colours that bounces light around the room.
